John Alite, born on September 30, 1962, in Queens, New York, is a former associate of the Gambino crime family who has recently transitioned into public service. His grandparents were Albanian immigrants from Gjirokastër, and he grew up in Woodhaven, Queens. Alite was a childhood friend of John A. Gotti, son of the notorious mob boss John Gotti, and even served as the best man at Gotti Jr.’s wedding in 1990.

Alite’s criminal career was extensive; he has admitted to involvement in six murders, participation in at least 37 shootings, and numerous assaults using a baseball bat. His activities spanned across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida, where he led a crew involved in various illegal enterprises, including extortion and armed robbery.

In 2008, facing racketeering charges, Alite chose to cooperate with federal authorities, providing testimony against former associates, including John A. Gotti. Although Gotti’s trial ended in a mistrial, Alite’s cooperation was deemed significant by prosecutors. He was sentenced to ten years in prison in 2011 but was released in 2012 under a supervised release program.

Following his release, Alite reinvented himself as a motivational speaker, author, and podcaster, focusing on steering youth away from crime. He co-authored several books, including “Gotti’s Rules” (2015) and “Darkest Hour” (2018), detailing his experiences in organized crime and his journey towards redemption.

In March 2025, Alite embarked on a new chapter by entering public service. He was appointed to fill a vacancy on the borough council of Englishtown, New Jersey, a small community with a population of approximately 2,300 residents. His appointment came after the resignation of several council members, and he was sworn in on March 15, 2025.

Alite’s decision to serve as a councilman is driven by a desire to give back to the community and utilize his past experiences to effect positive change. A significant motivator for his public service is his personal tragedy; his 30-year-old daughter, Chelsea, died three years ago from a fentanyl overdose. This loss has fueled his commitment to combating illegal drug use and supporting after-school programs to keep youth engaged and away from harmful activities.

Despite initial skepticism from some community members due to his past, Alite has been transparent about his history and emphasizes his commitment to redemption and positive community involvement. He has waived the council’s modest salary, indicating his dedication to service over personal gain. Looking ahead, Alite has expressed interest in pursuing higher political office, potentially aiming for a congressional seat, as he continues to leverage his unique life experiences to serve and improve his community.
