Paul Castellano was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in 1915, to Italian immigrants Giuseppe and Concetta Castellano (née Cassata). Giuseppe was a butcher and an early member of the Mangano crime family, the forerunner of the Gambino family. Castellano dropped out of school in the eighth grade to learn butchering and collecting numbers game receipts, both from his father.[2] In July 1934, Castellano was arrested for the first time in Hartford, Connecticut for robbing a haberdasher.
The 19-year-old Castellano refused to identify his two accomplices to the police and served a three-month prison sentence. By refusing to cooperate with authorities, Castellano enhanced his reputation for mob loyalty.[2]
Castellano’s sister Catherine had married one of their cousins, future Mafia boss Carlo Gambino, in 1932. In 1937, Castellano married his childhood sweetheart Nina Manno; the couple had three sons (Paul, Philip, and Joseph Castellano) and a daughter, Constance Castellano, Manno died in 1999. He was of no relation to actor Richard S. Castellano from The Godfather, despite claims made by Richard’s wife after his death.
The Rise of Paul Castellano, would be marred by a lot of things. One of the bigger problems Castellano would have, was attempting to move the crime family into more legitimate businesses, often times isolating himself on Staten Island, which began to cause an internal issue for the Gambino crime family. The secondary issue that Castellano would face, would be wanting a bigger slice of the pie from his members, which was met with distain and disgust.
This week Castellano gives the green light to the DeMeo Crew, which would be his undoing. At this current time and place in the show, Castellano doesn’t know Angelo Ruggiero has been caught repeatedly on tape already, and Roy DeMeo and his crew begin to wipe anyone off the map who gives them any nonsense. The FBI was on the heels of DeMeo, and a man sitting in the background is beginning to lose patience with Castellano’s bullish attitude. That man? John Gotti. The 3rd mistake Castellano makes, is bringing The Westies into the fold and allowing DeMeo to oversee them.
Did you know that Castellano didn’t even want to induct Roy DeMeo into the mafia?
Did you know, John Gotti refused to commit the murder of Roy DeMeo? The reality is, it wasn’t out of fear, it was because of the pure heat it would bring. Too many content creators get this wrong.
