5 MOST BRUTAL MOB HITS IN AMERICA
In this MTR video, we discuss five of the most brutal mob hits to have taken place in American Cosa Nostra history. We explain the players, the mistakes made, and the history behind the hits. We discuss the Infamous St. Valentines Day Massacre, The Hit on Angelo Bruno, The Hit on Tony Spilotro, The hit on Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, and the murder of Carmine Galante.
As we say in the organized crime world, not every murder is money driven, and not every murder is personal, but each of these murders discussed in this episode will unveil the climate at the time, the mistakes powerful men made, and is proof that sometimes a kind word is not enough in the streets. Each of these murders changed the trajectory of organized crime.
ST. VALENTINES DAY MASSACRE
This brutal hit, was related to retaliation and turf over bootlegging. Al Capone ordered the murders, and it would come back to haunt him, as it totally and unequivocally ended his run at the top of the Chicago Mob, as the commission loathed his decision of mayhem over discussion. It brought nothing but heat to Capone and all of organized crime.
ANGELO BRUNO HIT
This hit, earmarked a turbulent decade for the streets in Philadelphia. Bruno, widely respected and regarded by New York families, was beginning to have problems with law enforcement in Philadelphia. Adding to that, were his rank and file who were bitter of Bruno taking drug proceeds from the Gambino’s in what was widely considered Philadelphia turf. Bruno didn’t want his men selling narcotics, but had no problem taking illicit funds from them. While Bruno was known as the Docile Don for negotiating versus bloodshed, it began to be earmarked not as a moniker of respect, but an insult as being soft.
THE BUGSY SIEGEL HIT
This murder, didn’t have to happen. Siegel had been a hell of an earner for the mafia, and a hell of a hitman. He was counted on when someone needed to disappear, but because he couldn’t say off the radar, would be sent out west to handle rackets in California. While out there, he would end up venturing to Vegas and shaking down William Wilkerson who at the time was building a casino called The Flamingo. Bugsy had a simple idea, and borrowed a ton of money from his mob cronies, and just began to worry more about his public persona and personal relationships than business. With costs rising higher than mob cronies wanted, and with repeated mistakes, The Flamingo would open and was a disaster. More money would be pumped into The Casino and would reopen months later. It was a success, but the profits began to disappear, and the mob was irate. Bugsy could talk his way out of a lot of things, but this time he couldn’t.
THE FARM BURIALS(TONY SPILOTRO HIT)
This murder is an infamous one. His whole life Tony was a tough guy. He earned his way by doing hits for the Chicago mob, and then joined the crew of Mad Sam DeStefano, one of the biggest psychopaths the mafia has ever seen then or since. Through DeStefano, he learned and crated his skills in torture and murder. Eventually his success in the murder department, Tony took over bookmaking and loansharking but quite perhaps a sign of things to come, couldn’t stay off the police radar. He’s eventually sent to Vegas to oversee the skimming operations and keep people in line, but he forgot rule number one. Those who make the rules can break the rules, but the ones who are supposed to play by the rules and brake them, pay with their lives.
THE HIT ON CARMINE GALANTE
One of the biggest earners in Bonanno crime family history, Galante from an early age, was brutal. He was collecting debts for the mob by age 15, and doing hits for them by 17. Galante was instrumental in the narcotics business, and would end up being sent to Canada by Joe Bonanno to handle the narcotics trade and gambling. Galante at first was a huge success in Canada, sending back some $50 million dollars in profits back east. Galante like so many others before and after allowed things to go to his head, and the Canadian government would get wise and expel him from the country. After taking a few pinches and prison time, he gets out just in time to blow the doors off Frank Costello’s crypt. At the time the Bonanno’s were undergoing regime change, and the newly elected boss Rusty Rastelli was in command, but would take a pinch, and Galante saw his chance. Galante would assume control through mayhem, and wanted to control all facts of the narcotics trade which now was controlled by the Gambino crime family. It wasn’t an issue for Galante who began killing made men within the Gambino crime family. Something had to be done, to curb the murders, and while Galante who was no stranger to carnage himself, would pay the ultimate price.
