Reformed Gangsters: The Podcast, hosted by Anthony Ruggiano Jr., was created to capture the public’s attention with compelling stories of mafia history while also offering tools and resources for mental health and addiction recovery.
Albert Anastasia was one of the most feared and powerful mobsters in American history. Born in Italy in 1902, he immigrated to the United States and quickly rose through the ranks of organized crime. As a founding member of Murder, Inc., the enforcement arm of the Mafia responsible for hundreds of contract killings, Anastasia earned a reputation for his brutality. Later, he became the boss of the Gambino crime family, solidifying his status as a major figure in the New York underworld.
His murder on October 25, 1957, inside the barber shop of the Park Sheraton Hotel (now the Park Central Hotel) in Manhattan was one of the most infamous mob hits in history. As Anastasia sat in the barber’s chair, two masked gunmen stormed in and riddled him with bullets. The hit was widely believed to have been orchestrated by rival mobsters, including Vito Genovese and Carlo Gambino, who sought to remove Anastasia and take control of the Mafia’s power structure.
His assassination marked a turning point in organized crime, signaling the end of an era of overt violence and the rise of a more corporate, business-like approach to the Mafia’s operations. It remains one of the most notorious hits in mob history.
