May 5, 1981, Joey Massino made a move on an alleged renegade faction within the Bonanno Crime Family. Massino, flanked by Gerlano Sciascia, Vito Rizzuto, Sal Vitale, whacked Sonny “Red” Indelicato, Dominick Trinchera, and Philip Giaccone. Massino had alleged that Sonny Red was planning a hostile take over, and approached Paul Castellano and Carmine Persico, about murdering them. According to reports, Castellano and Persico, told Massino not to hesitate and to handle business.The problem is, this information was based on Sonny Red allegedly stockpiling weapons, which many have reported to be the truth, when in fact, it’s not.
While Sonny Red might have had ideas of taking over an unstable family with Rastelli in prison, it doesn’t take a lot to understand the reality of the situation. There was one man who stood the most to gain by getting Sonny Red out of the way, especially when you consider that Massino had just been made a capo within the family after handing the Galante issue on behalf of Rusty Rastelli. Indelicato stood in the way of what Massino wanted, and there was only one way to handle it.
Many have gotten it wrong over the years, and many have speculated falsely that Massino and Sonny Black were tight, the film Donnie Brasco even highlighted that friendship, but reality was Massino wanted Sonny Black out of the way as well. While we know Sonny Black would be murdered by Frank Lino on the orders of Massino, it wasn’t just because of the Donnie Brasco issue, as Massino was hell bent on killing Sonny Black, because he’s another one with more seniority who stood in Massino’s way.
Massino, was the ultimate snake.
