Tony Soprano, one of the most iconic mob bosses in TV history, was born Anthony John Soprano in Newark, New Jersey, in 1959. His family hails from Ariano, Avellino in Naples, Italy, and his father, Johnny, was a Caporegime in the DeMeo family. Tony started his life of crime with hijackings and card game robberies before being inducted into the DiMeo family by Ercole DiMeo in 1982. After rising to capo by 1988, Tony became a key figure in the family’s operations in gambling, extortion, and loansharking. The death of Jackie Aprile and the internal strife with his uncle Corrado led to Tony taking over as boss by 2006. His leadership sparked a deadly war with the Lupertazzi family, ultimately leading to his assassination at Holsten’s diner in 2007.
