Our guest is retired FBI Special Agent Jim Bird. Jim retired in 2009 after 31 years of impeccable service. In the 1980s, he spent six years in San Juan, Puerto Rico, investigating a massive corruption case that resulted in well over one hundred convictions of high-level police officials and local organized crime figures charged with a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking, RICO, kidnapping, and several murders.
Jim was also assigned for two years to the Office of the Legal Attaché in the US Consulate, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, where he supervised all FBI criminal and counter-terrorism investigations in several Mexican states. However, most of Jim’s career was spent in San Diego, investigating drug and human trafficking organizations and other violent crimes.
He also was the FBI case agent in the investigation that led to the conviction of Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham. Cunningham served as a Republican member of the US House of Representatives from California’s 50th district from 1991 to 2005, and later served prison time for accepting bribes from defense contractors.
As a Hostage Negotiator for 13 years and as a Spanish speaker, Jim handled dozens of cross-border kidnappings, most taking place in the Cartel-controlled border area. Due to his expertise, he has provided training to hundreds of federal, state, and local U. S. and Mexican law enforcement officers and business leaders regarding kidnapping investigations and negotiation strategies.
Jim Bird is what every FBI agent should aspire to be. Jim’s standards, work ethic, integrity, rigorous investigations, and attention to detail have consistently demonstrated an exceptional mastery of professional skills. Jim is one of the FBI’s best G-man. I had the honor to work with Jim for several years, working bank robberies, kidnappings, and a very complex murder-for-hire. The murder-for-hire and abduction of a US citizen crossed international lines, and if it weren’t for Jim, I would not have solved the case, which led to the arrest of several individuals on both the border.
