John Gotti in 1985 takes matters into his own hands, and pulls off one of the biggest brazen mob hits in the history of organized crime. Almost immediately after taking over as boss, he begins to have problems. He didn’t walk in the back door, without having it’s share of issues.
Gotti was almost immediately known as the new boss, and didn’t try to do much to stop it. As Gotti takes over law enforcement pressure begins, and very quickly someone is making a move on the Gotti hierarchy. In 1986, a car bomb would kill Frankie DeCicco. Over the years there have been debates about who was responsible for that murder. Many have blamed Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, the truth is, Vincent Gigante didn’t pull those strings. The truth is, one man was behind that, and it was Anthony “Gaspipe” Casso, who had his reasons. What has been lost in history, is that Casso had a long standing beef with Angelo Ruggiero.
In this episode we dive in, as Gotti begins his rise, he has immediate issues. We following along the bloody path, as Gotti has to deal with the ramifications of the DeCicco hit, and has to plan his retribution against the Colombo crime family. The problem Gotti has, is indictments coming his own way, and has Gravano playing sides against Gotti.
There will be huge debate historically about who what and when pulled the strings about that bombing, but we think we have the closest answer. You will see, and hear how Gravano indeed was the recipient of good luck of the death of DeCicco, as it would continue to happen for almost another few years. Gravano would use Gotti, lie to Gotti to absorb his own businesses. Too many times people have believed that Gravano was some sort of expert businessman, but turns out, he was good at one thing, and that was lying to Gotti to get people killed, so he could absorb their businesses.
While Gotti begins to face some indictments, Willie Boy Johnson is outed by a vicious overzealous prosecutor named Diane Giacalone, who essentially outs Johnson as an informant, sealing his fate. Never has a prosecutor ever done that publicly before or since. She outed him because he refused to testify against John Gotti. With Johnson supplying information against the Gambino’s, he clammed up and refused to utter another word. As Johnson would be rendered useless at that point, she outs another informant in the same fashion in Billy Battista.
When begins to play out for Gotti, is Gravano beginning to lie to John Gotti about a lot of things. 1986, Ruggiero has two indictments ongoing, and and 3rd drops on his lap. Gotti was already furious with Ruggiero for a million reasons, but the next indictment was enough for Gotti, and that essentially destroyed their relationship, and Gotti would toss him out of the mafia.
